Full description
The stretch of coast between Colombo and Galle is the most developed part of Sri Lanka's shoreline and also the easiest to see well in a single day, because the southern expressway takes the pain out of the driving. This private trip works its way down through four stops and back, with a car and driver on hand the whole time.
Bentota comes first, where the river meets the sea behind a sandspit and the mangrove estuary opens out inland. The river safari here runs about an hour through mangrove tunnels and past small islands, one of them given over to cinnamon, which was the commodity that brought the Dutch to this coast in the first place.
At Hikkaduwa the reef sits close enough to the beach that green turtles come into the shallows to graze, and you can snorkel or simply wade out and watch. It is one of the few places where seeing a wild turtle needs no boat and no luck. Please do not touch or ride them; guides who encourage it are worth ignoring.
Kosgoda's turtle conservation project is the complement to that: hatchling tanks, injured adults that cannot be released, and an explanation of why five of the seven marine turtle species nest on this coast. Ask how quickly hatchlings are released; the good projects keep them briefly.
Galle Fort closes the loop. The Portuguese built here, the Dutch rebuilt in the 1660s, and the British ran it after 1796 without much altering the plan. Inside the walls the streets still carry Dutch names, the ramparts are walkable the whole way round, and the 1848 lighthouse anchors the seaward corner. If time allows, Unawatuna beach is a short hop further on before the drive back north.
